SECURITY CHECKLIST FOR JEWISH INSTITUTIONS
A. POLICE COOPERATION
1. Good communication should be developed with district police
personnel. 2. Give your district station three phone numbers of people who
can be called in an emergency.
B. BASIC SECURITY SUGGESTIONS
1. Doors should be locked with deadbolt locks and windows equipped
with good locks. 2. All windows should be locked when not in use or when the
building is not in use. 3. Trees and bushes should not be allowed to cover
windows and doors. 4. Outside passageways should be enclosed by gates that
can be locked. 5. Buildings should be well-lit on the outside. 6. Cash
should not be left in buildings and office equipment serial numbers should be
recorded. 7. Someone should be aware of the general location of equipment and
what is located in each room of the building. 8. Arrange for a site security
survey with your local police department.
C. ADDITIONAL SECURITY SUGGESTIONS
1. Open areas and play fields should be fenced, where
possible. 2. Ground floor windows should be covered with metal grates. 3.
Burglar alarms should be installed. 4. Your Board should consider the
advisability of utilizing private guards, when necessary.
D. FOREIGN OBJECTS
1. Custodians should check their buildings daily, especially on
the outside. 2. In an emergency, call 911. Foreign objects (e.g., boxes,
parcels, pieces of metal pipe, etc.) should be checked with extreme caution. If
there is any suspicion that the object contains explosive material, the building
should be cleared. Immediately call 911; then call the Jewish Community
Relations Council (JCRC) at 317-926-2935.
E. TELEPHONE BOMB THREATS
1. In an emergency, call 911. Call your district police station;
then call the JCRC at 317-926-2935. Police phone numbers should be posted by
every phone.
F. SUSPICIOUS OCCURRENCES
1. Suspicious individuals and occurrences should be reported to
the police and to the JCRC at the above number. 2. If any threatening
letters, faxes, or e-mails are received, they should be handled as little as
possible, and set aside for police to pick up as possible evidence. Similarly,
threatening or hate-directed phone messages should be saved and turned over to
police. JCRC should be notified. 3. In the event of any arson attempts, call
911. Notify the JCRC as well.
G. OTHER EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
1. Everyone using a building should be aware of the location of
exits. 2. Fire extinguishers should be available and checked every year by an
authorized company.
