Archives City of Indianapolis Proclamation WHEREAS, 2003 marks the 55th anniversary of the founding of the modern Jewish state of Israel, and Israel was officially declared an independent nation on May 14, 1948; and WHEREAS, Israel has much to commemorate and celebrate, most notably that it has been established in a short time, and that in the face of intractable opposition and hostility, it is a free, modern and politically stable nation; and WHEREAS, in its 55 years of existence, Israel has become the only democracy in the Middle East, and its citizens enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the area; and WHEREAS, born in the ashes of the Holocaust, Israel has faced the hostility and armed aggression of its neighbors, and despite difficult and often dangerous circumstances, Israel has prospered by being blessed with a succession of great leaders; and WHEREAS, the connection between the State of Indiana and Israel is reflected in joint research and development grants shared by Purdue University, the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University with their counterparts in Israel, and the State of Indiana has established formal commercial ties with Israel through an office in Jerusalem; and WHEREAS, Israel will observe its anniversary with events marking the birth and development of the state, the struggle to find peace and security and its hopes for the future; Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved: Section 2. That a copy of the resolution be transmitted to Israeli Ambassador Daniel Ayalon as an expression of our city’s admiration for Israel’s manifold accomplishments and best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous future; Bart
