What to do when you contact an elected official:

Tips on e-mailing:

• Use your own words

• Be specific. Limit your email to one bill/issue at a time. Be sure you include the bill number and description in the email.

• Keep the email short.

• Clearly state what you want your legislator to do; support or oppose legislation, provide information, etc.

• Write from your personal perspective. Tell your legislator how the bill will impact you, your family, community, etc.

• Support your position with accurate, up to date information

• Be courteous.

• Include your name, address, and email address in the correspondence.

• Follow up with your legislator. If they vote or take an action you requested, take time to send a thank you.

Tips for calling on the phone:

• Identify yourself.

• State your reason for calling, refer to the bill by number.

• Be brief and specific with your request.

• Thank the person for speaking with you.

If you can not reach your elected official: Leave A Message!!!

Tips for snail mailing:

• Individualize your letter. Be sure to use your own words.

• Be specific. Limit your correspondence to one bill/subject at a time. Be certain to include the bill number and a brief description of the issue in your letter.

• Clearly state the action you wish your legislator to take; support, oppose, provide information.

• If you are requesting action, be sure to provide accurate, up to date information.

• Personalize the letter. Tell the legislator what the impacts will be on yourself, your family, community, etc.

• Always be courteous.

• Sign your name. Include your name and address on the letter and the envelope.

• Follow up with your legislator. If they take an action that you requested, take time to thank them with a phone call or a follow up letter.
